Track Name: My Song
Gotta go, gotta go,
‘cause the sunlight’s on the road,
and I’ve got to be in Texas before long,
but if you hold the line,
I’ll be back to make you mine,
and until then I will leave you with my song.

Take good care of the words
and watch out for the verse,
‘cause it’s got a couple tricky little turns,
but a song must be sung,
especially when it’s young;
that’s the only way it’s ever going to learn.

So, my love, as I go,
I’ll be singing, soft and low,
and I promise you that every word is true,
and if you hum a line,
and think of me from time to time,
then I’ll come back home to sing along with you.

Keep the melody true,
and the harmony, too,
‘cause I’ve only got so many notes to give,
but a song must be sang,
or the spirit will wane,
and without a spirit, how’s it going to live?

Gotta go, gotta go,
‘cause the sunlight’s on the road,
and I’ve got to be in Texas before long,
but if you hold the line,
I’ll be back to make you mine,
and until then I will leave you with my song.
Track Name: Love Song (for a world that could end at any moment)
There are people running scared and feeling unprepared,
and it’s starting to spread.
Some new catastrophe might lead to tragedy;
now, everyone’s lost his head.
Monarchs and magistrates, they argue and recriminate
as rationale and reason unfurl,
but we’re just a boy and a girl,
and it’s just the end of the world,

so unplug the phone, because nobody’s calling,
except to say that the sky is falling.
Hop in the car, and if the engine doesn’t stall, then,
we’ll take a ride on the rings around Saturn.
We’re out of gas, but out here it doesn’t matter.
We’ll float around where the dust is all scattered,
and when the Earth is in the sky
we’ll blow it one last kiss and say, “Goodbye.”

Maybe Mars finally took shots at Mercury,
and we’ve been hit by a stray.
Maybe it’s finally done; we’ve worn a hole right to the sun,
and we’re all melting away.
Maybe we found a cure; the world’s not ending anymore,
but it’s sure turned a strange shade of gray,
so we’ll take a long holiday,
and cruise the whole Milky Way,

CHORUS
Track Name: Yellow and Blue
Like the robin’s red breast at a black tie affair,
you stand out here whatever you do,
as the fine-painted fingers you run through your hair
find the reds that live there in the yellow and blue.

And the sky makes a show just for you.
It bends down its light to reflect off your shoe,
but it shines on the dear and the daring ones, too.
What to do?

But, blue skies have rainbows
that lead where the heart goes.
The stars in the night chose
to sleep in the day.
And dreamers of skylines
grow yellow in sunshine
and whisper in your mind,
“Fly, fly away.”

You laugh at the lightning that lights up the sky
as you dream about faraway things,
‘cause you know that you will always stay warm and dry
in your house painted colors of butterfly wings.

And you slip yourself notes in your purse
to try to decide if it’s a blessing or a curse,
but you can’t make your mind either way, and what’s worse?
It still hurts.

CHORUS

The whole city’s in flames
at the sound of your name,
but don’t let it swallow you down,
‘cause the monsters are real
and they know how you feel,
and they’re driving all over this town.

Like the tune that keeps playing inside of your head
while you sit at the library being well-read,
but you’ve still never heard, not a word that I’ve said.
Boy, ain’t my face red.
Track Name: The Way That Love Goes
The envelope was silver-lined,
it held the perfect Valentine
for a girl who's never had the time
for Valentines before.

She broke the seal and read the words
and heard the singing of the birds
and she relied on every word
to get her through the door.

Ain't that the way that love goes, babe, when a love goes right?
Two lovers laughing through the day and loving through the night.

So, take the time; remember when.
Open up your heart again.
If you decide to let me in,
we’ll never want for more.

Ain’t this the way that love goes, babe, when a love takes flight?
Two lovers always there to say, “it’s going to be all right.”

So, scrap the why, forget the how,
‘cause who is all we need for now.
Everything’s what we allow,
and everything’s in store.
Track Name: Trainsong
Your pardon if I seem too shy, it’s just that I’m the sort of guy
who sees that look in someone’s eye and wonders if it’s real -
a memory of a younger man at a loss for words with shaking hands,
who felt the pinch and turned and ran, afraid to learn to feel.

It’s nothing that you did, my dear, but I can never quite see clear
when words are whispered in my ear; my senses start to fade.
So patiently you played the part, were careful with my cautious heart.
You pulled my armor all apart and showed me what we’d made.

And every night the train goes by and sings its lonesome song.
The engines cry, the pistons sigh, and I can sing along.
It sings of all the trials and tribulations of a train,
but I sing of my lady who would stand and watch the rain.

Forgive me if I sigh at night and watch the trains in amber light
and harmonize with all my might and wonder if you hear -
some grand acoustical design that scales the miles on cargo lines
to bring this little song of mine to your awaiting ear.

CHORUS

And if I could sing louder than the twin jet-powered engines can,
I’d send my words to travel on a plane,
but the lyrics never look quite right when lit up by the runway lights,
and, besides that, there’s just something about singing with a train.

I’m sorry if I ramble on and keep you up ‘til after dawn
as I compose my simple song and watch the shooting stars -
a memory that hasn’t been where you’re with me to share the scene
and we can find our song to sing to lonesome railway cars.

CHORUS
Track Name: Temporary Love Song
This is just a temporary love song.
By “temporary,” yes, I mean the love.
The song will stay the same
when she takes someone else’s name.
I know I’m not the one she’s dreaming of.

This is just another brief distraction
from the tired and the lonely and the blue.
We’ll keep our minds away
from the things we never say,
like, “I know I won’t be growing old with you.”

You don’t have to tell me that you love me.
If you did, I never would believe,
because you can’t tell a lie;
I can see it in your eye.
Do you really think that I’d be that naive?

This is just a temporary love song.
By “temporary,” yes, I mean the love.
The song will stay the same
when I give someone else my name.
I know you're not the one I’m dreaming of.
Track Name: Refugee
Well, I kind of thought that you’d know the cost
when you win the race, but all is lost,
so why do you always seem like you’re ready to run?

You got cold and wet standing in the rain,
and you walked through the mud, and it left a stain.
You spent some time on the road trying to find the sun,
but you realized you weren’t having any fun.

Well, I looked through the bars and saw everything
that you did for the title and the golden ring,
so why do you always tell me I’ve got it wrong?

I said from the start that I know the game,
and I never tried to make you feel ashamed,
so why do you always sing me the same old song
and change all the words when I try to sing along?

So, now you’re looking for a home with a view of the sea,
and it might be here, but it won’t be with me,
‘cause you’ve been everywhere that you wanted to be,
and me, I’d just be your refugee.

So, you tore up the world and you washed it clean
with a lit cigarette and some gasoline,
and you called yourself a child of the Summer sun.

You sneak to the roof and you watch it set
behind the last remains of the parapet
that you’ve been chipping away since we first begun.
Where once there were hundreds, now there’s a lonely one.

So, now you’re looking for a place to pretend to be free,
and it might be here, but it won’t be with me,
‘cause you’ve been everything that you wanted to be,
and me, I’d just be your refugee.
Track Name: We Demanded More
Cowboys come and cowboys go.
Your first encounter taught you so.
You should have quit them long ago,
but now’s not the time for second guesses.

You try to tell yourself the breaks
are only proof that you’re awake,
so you delight in each mistake,
and find all the mirth in making messes.

So, we sit beneath the moon so hazy.
It never ceases to amaze me,
but you're the only one can phase me now.
We take all of our grief for granted.
We threw out our beliefs and they landed
high up in the trees we planted
back when we demanded more.

We’ve spent so long trying to find
the people that we’ve left behind,
but now, our fortitude’s declined,
‘cause what will we do if we ever find them?

So, all the roads that lead away
just strengthen our resolve to stay.
They won’t remember, anyway,
and we’ve nothing left with which to remind them.

So, we focus on the small confusions,
lose ourselves in our illusions,
and come to all the wrong conclusions now.
We take all of our grief for granted.
We threw out our beliefs and they landed
high up in the trees we planted
back when we demanded more.
Track Name: Arkansas
I should probably shut my mouth before I push her away,
but that's just what I've always done, and look where I am today,
sitting here in a hotel room with a pad and a pen,
a cup of coffee and this guitar, singing solo again.

There's a pair of eyes in Arkansas calling
from a lady in a southern family home,
and she may not realize how far I've fallen,
but she lets me dream I might not die alone.

It might be a waste of time, but it's my time to waste.
Brother, I'd wager everything for the chance at one little taste.
I'm trying to stop hiding out from everything that I need.
Now that I've got my heart in line, it's time to get my head up to speed.

There's a pair of eyes heading out to Mobile,
while I'm driving past the California line.
If I only had the words to say how I feel,
I'd turn myself around and make her mine.

There's a pair of eyes in California wishing
for the only pair of eyes they want to see.
From this point on, this man is on a mission
to be the man that she’d want me to be.
Track Name: Title Song
Songs about crying and slamming the door
are songs that I don’t want to sing anymore.
Now that I’ve seen what the world has in store,
I want to sing the songs I sang before.

Songs about songs and the muses I’ve met,
some revived to right wrongs, some with ink that’s still wet,
some for which I am forever in debt,
and some with a hint, just a hint of regret.

I know the songs that the mockingbird brings
are songs about flying and other fun things.
I want to know how it feels to have wings,
so I’ll see if I can take off when I sing

songs about songs and the loves that I’ve known,
some intend to endear, some attempt to atone,
some meant to show you just how much I’ve grown,
and there’s some that tell truths and some others that don’t.

Songs that attempt to reveal a vignette,
some clear as day, some a faint silhouette.
I’ll make up the words if I start to forget
the songs about songs and the muses I’ve met.

Songs about songs and the muses I’ve met,
some revived to right wrongs, some with ink that’s still wet,
some for which I am forever in debt,
songs about songs and the muses I’ve met.
